Iranian actress sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in jail

Tehran, Oct 10: Marzieh Vafamehr, an Iranian actress has been sentenced to 90 lashes and year in jail for allegedly working in a movie that centres around the limits brought down on artists in the Islamic republic.

Marzieh Vafamehr, the actress was arrested in July after she appeared in ‘My Tehran for Sale,’ which came under criticism in the Islamic circles, reported the Media.

The movie spins around a young actress in Tehran whose theatre work is banned by the authorities and is by force made to lead a secret life to express herself artistically.

The movie was however banned from screening in Iran but was distributed illegally throughout the country, said the Media.

According to Kala meh.com, an Iranian website, Vafamehr was sentenced on Saturday, Oct 8.

“A verdict has been issued for Marzieh Vafamehr, sentencing her to a year in jail and 90 lashes,” said the website.

“Her lawyer has appealed the sentence, which was handed down yesterday (Saturday),” it added.
