NEW DELHI: The decomposed body of a 32-year-old software engineer was discovered from his home in Old Rajinder Nagar area of central Delhi on Sunday morning. The body of Ram Pataria was sent to the Lok Nayak Hospital, where a postmortem was to be conducted on Monday.

According to the police, the victim had been depressed for the last few months. ‘‘We received a call around 10 am that he was not responding to frantic calls from his mother who was waiting outside his house. When we broke open the door to the three-room rented apartment, we found Pataria’s body lying face down in the drawing room. Prima facie, it appears to be suicide as the doors were locked from inside. However, our theory will be confirmed once we get the postmortem report,’’ said a senior investigating officer. DCP (Central) Alok Kumar also ruled out any foul play and said: ‘‘There was no scope for a murderer to enter the room except the main door which was locked from inside.’’

According to the victim’s mother Nandini Mathur Pataria, who lives with the rest of her family in Sagar (MP), she received a call from her eldest son on Thursday. ‘‘He told me that he was depressed over a few issues and I decided to come down to meet him in Delhi. On Friday, when his elder sister called him, he repeated the same thing to her. Since then, there has been no word from him,’’ she said.

Pataria had been staying in Delhi for the last eight years. He was working as a research engineer in a software firm in Mehrauli. He took up the Rajinder Nagar apartment three years ago.

Family sources said the victim married six years ago and had a son. His wife left him within two years and took the couple’s child with her to Gwalior. She then lodged a dowry case against him.

‘‘This upset Ram no end. He was depressed since he could not visit his son. A few days ago, he pleaded with his wife to allow him to spend some time with his son on the child’s birthday, but his plea was turned down,” alleged a family member. Nandini said she reached her son’s house around 8.30 am on Sunday. ‘‘I knocked repeatedly, but he did not open the door,’’ she said.

The victim’s neighbour Ruchir Katiyar said: ‘‘My cook came in the morning and complained of a foul smell. I thought he was over-reacting and went upstairs to check. I found his mother crying in front of the door. Around 9 am we called the police.” He added that Ram was reserved and rarely had any visitors, except his family members.
