KANPUR: A 24-year-old man committed suicide under the Chakeri police station here on last Sunday night.

According to reports, the police identified him as Vikram, son of Ram Gopal, a resident of Deviganj Bhatta. Vikram’s father told the police that he was unable to cope with “mental torture” inflicted by his wife and in-laws.

His wife Seema and her family members had humiliated him in full public view on at least half-a-dozen occasions in the past few months, claimed his family members.

A senior police officer of Chakeri police station said: “The investigations are still on and initially we have found the allegations to be true. For, locals have also blamed Vikram’s in-laws and his wife.”

As the news of Vikram’s death spread this morning, locals in large numbers assembled in front of his house in the Deviganj Bhatta locality in the Chakeri area.

Vikram’s wife had left the house without informing her husband on May 6. A police report had also been lodged in that connection. On Sunday, Vikram had another tiff while he went to bring his wife back home. After which, he returned home and locked himself in his room. His body was found hanging in the morning.
