Man arrested after wife commits suicide

Kolkata, Jan 9 A 27-year-old man was arrested Thursday for allegedly provoking his wife, the mother of a five-week-old daughter, to commit suicide in a West Bengal town, the police said.

The incident took place at Dum Dum town in neighbouring North 24 Parganas district Wednesday night.

“Debasis Mitra was having an affair for the past one year with his wife Lopamudra’s friend Sumana Pal. When the wife learnt about it, she had an altercation with him Wednesday night,” an officer of the Dum Dum police station told reporters.

The officer said Lopamudra locked herself inside the kitchen and “around 9 p.m., she emptied kerosene oil from the stove, sprinkled it over her and set herself on fire.

“When Mitra noticed her, he broke open the kitchen door and rushed her to a hospital with 96 percent burns. She died Thursday morning.”

The officer said Mitra was arrested and Sumana Pal was also being questioned.

“We have arrested Mitra in the morning for provoking Lopamudra to commit suicide and also detained his girlfriend Pal,” the officer said.
