As per her own words “In the little time we spent together, nothing happened for him to divorce me” still women in india file various cases on men,if he send divorce notice, when marriage failed.
Dumped after honeymoon, a 46-year-old woman filed a complaint against her NRI husband with the Adalaj police. Sandy, a resident of Royal Residency behind Swagat Bungalows in Adalaj, also met IGP (CID Crime) Meera Sreenivas and submitted an application seeking immediate action against her husband Julius Rathod.
Sandy approached the police after Julius, who resides in Des Plaines area of Chicago city in Illinois state of US, sent her a divorce notice a year after marriage.
‘I was betrayed’
Speaking to media, Sandy said, “Julius betrayed me. We married a year ago, went abroad for a honeymoon and soon he returned to America. While I thought he was making arrangements for me to join him there, he was preparing a divorce notice. He had satisfied his lust, and I was dispensable. I will not let him off so easily.”
The 46-year-old has also submitted an application with the Ahmedabad Women’s Crime Cell in this regard.
Meeting the groom
Sandy was earlier married to Shishir Kumar Turner, with whom she had two kids: Robins, 24, and Smith, 21. Turner was an alcoholic. Regular fights on this issue ended in the couple getting divorced. Sandy got custody of the kids.
In January 2007, Yakoob Macwan, priest of a church at CTM charrasta, told her about a 47-year-old who was coming from the US in search of a bride. Macwan asked Sandy if she was interested in meeting Julius, a divorcee with two daughters.
Sandy agreed. A meeting was set up at the church. The two liked each other and met several times over the next 22 days. “Julius left for the US, but a couple of months later, he came back and expressed his desire to marry me. He wanted me and my sons to settle in the US with him,” said Sandy.
The couple got married at a church in Jetalpur in Ahmedabad on June 9, 2008. The wedding was solemnised by Macwan.
Julius’s elder brother David, a resident of Shrenik Society in Rakhial, and Sandy’s friend Asha Desai signed as witnesses to the marriage.
The newlyweds stayed at Parkland Hotel in Maninagar on their wedding night. And left for their honeymoon to Singapore and Malaysia the next day. The two came back to Ahmedabad on June 18 and Julius left for America on June 22.
The marriage was formally registered at the Registrar General of Marriage in Gandhinagar on June 24. Following this, Sandy also got her husband’s name and other relevant details included in her passport.
The growing rift
Said Sandy, “After Julius went to the US, the frequency of phone calls dropped. Then came the shocker. On May 4 this year, he sent me a divorce petition. He had filed an application in this regard with the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.”
The 46-year-old said, “Julius cheated me. He was divorced twice in the past but told me that he had married only once. I got to know of the second marriage after the wedding. In the little time we spent together, nothing happened for him to divorce me. I have also found out that he is coming back to India to marry again. I want him to be punished so that he does not cheat another woman ever again.”
Sandy sent a reply to the divorce notice on July 18 and filed a complaint against Julius with the Adalaj police under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 498a (husband or his kin subjecting woman to cruelty) of the IPC.
