CHANDIGARH: Obscene emails are becoming a common way to target individuals in the city. A Cyber Crime Investigation Cell inquiry into such a case following the complaint of a man from Sector 7 showed that the emails had been sent by a Sector-51 woman.
A senior CCIC official said that this was the first time that the investigation agency was handling an obscene email case in which the alleged perpetrator was a woman.
Though the exact reason for the emails has not been ascertained, the preliminary probe revealed the complainant had rejected the woman’s marriage proposal, said the official.
The complainant, a resident of Sector 7, had originally filed the complaint against unidentified individuals about a month-and-a-half ago.
A member of the investigating team said the woman had sent the emails from two accounts and the man had failed to recognize the sender.
Cops said they had managed to trace the internet protocol address through which the emails were sent. The connection is registered in the name of the woman’s father, a CCIC official said.
The accused is studying law at a city-based institute.
A police official said there was a possibility of the two parties patching up as the families of the two involved persons were closely acquainted.
However, if a criminal case was to be registered it would be the first such instance of a woman facing charges of obscenity, he said.
The woman would be summoned for interrogation soon, he added.
