Wikileaks:More blot on ISI over Kasab’s identity

Islamabad, Sept 17: Mahmood Durrani has claimed that he wrote to the authority and consulted with ISI chief General Shuja Pasha before going to media and declaring Ajmal Amir Kasab as a Pakistani, according to a latest US cable revealed by Wikileaks.

Mahmood Durrani consulted with ISI chief with this regards and only after he getting his approval, Durrani declared that kasab was a Pakistani.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was in Lahore when he learnt about the declaration and was out of the loop, cable disclosed. Later, Gilani decide to fire Durrani on Jan 7, 2009 for not conferring with him.

Kasab was among a group of 10 terrorists who sneaked into Mumbai in 2008 and unleashed terrorists attack that left 166 dead. Kasab, a lone survivor, who was captured alive by security forces.

Durrani said that he was one among the four authorised people who made such statements on behalf of government. However, the Pakistani government didn’t coordinate with the release of the information. Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir first denied the information, later he confirmed it .

Durrani asserted that when he was sacked, President Asif Ali Zardari called him and apologised him for several times.
