Mastermind behind a Robbary

Mangalore, July 12 (8.30 p.m): The Suratkal police have nabbed Chetan from Idya, Suratkal accused on a charge of robbery at the bill collection centre of Mescom here.

City police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, addressing a media meet, said that Chetan committed the crime to help his girlfriend who worked at the private bill collecting centre for Mescom.

Singh said Poornima (20) was working as an ATP operator in private bill collecting centre of Mescom. The collection centre which operates on commission basis collects the bill amounts and remits them to Mescom account.

According to the complaint lodged by Incharge of private bill collecting centre of Mescom, Ramesh Shetty, a masked man who came in a bike threatened Poornima and robbed Rs 1,36,278 on the evening of July 10. Poornima immediately informed Ramesh Shetty about the crime following which a complaint was registered at Suratkal Police station.

However, based on the complaint, the Suratkal Police took Poornima into custody on 11 July and while questioning it came to light it was her own plot to make it appear like a robbery. Poornima was in dire need of money and she asked her boyfriend Chetan (23 years) to assist her in committing the crime. Chetan was arrested by the Suratkal police on Tuesday, July 12.

Singh said it was the first time that such crime was reported in Suratkal police station and on suspicion they took Poornima into custody for interrogation. Police have seized Rs 1,20,885 from Chetan who has been sent to judicial custody.
