Shubankar Katyayan Khan, 33, a native of Jamshedpur, was working with a software giant in the city. In June 2007, he married Nandini from Baroda. The marriage was registered in the city on December 1, 2007.
Following a strained relationship, the two applied for divorce. Nandini filed a complaint alleging dowry harassment. Following a court direction, Commercial Street police arrested Khan on July 27 and he was remanded to judicial custody.
His advocates had applied for bail. On Friday, Shubankar was admitted to Victoria Hospital after he consumed some tablets in jail. He died on Saturday morning. The couple has a six-month-old boy.
Shubankar’s lawyer Anand said: “We have not yet received the post-mortem report. Once we know the cause of death, we will proceed further.” According to him, mental harassment pushed Khan to take the extreme step.
