65 yr-old set on fire by daughter-in-law in Goa

18 Mar 2009 PANAJI:

Angelina Fernandes (65) from Santa Cruz, who died of burn injuries on Tuesday, was allegedly set alight by her daughter-in-law on Monday evening.

Old Goa police said that the crime was the outcome of a domestic dispute between the two. According to the police, Angelina and her daughter-in-law Fatima Fernandes (30) were both admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital with burn injuries at 4.30 pm on Monday.

At the hospital, the sub divisional magistrate recorded Angelina’s statement, who said: “She (Fatima) poured something on me, lit a paper and burnt me.”

Police had registered a case of attempt to murder against Fatima, but Angelina who had suffered 90% burn injuries breathed her last at around 4 am on Tuesday. The police then registered a case of murder against Fatima. Fatima, however, could not be arrested as she too was hospitalised.

Fatima was shifted to a private hospital on Tuesday, where she is receiving medical treatment. Police say she is expecting a baby and is four months pregnant. Police say she will be arrested once she is discharged. According to the statement from a neighbour to the police, Angelina was frequently harassed by her daughter-in-law.
