CrPc Amendment Implemented soon – Govt

New Delhi, Oct 21 In the midst of protests by lawyers over some provisions, the government today said it will implement the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code in the near future.

Law Minister M Veerappa Moily told reporters that the government was addressing the issue and “shortly, we will be in a position to bring about amicable settlement so that the CrPC amendment is operationalised”.

To a question on why the government was not settling the issue with lawyers, he said “it was for the Bar Council to tame the lawyers” and the government cannot take on the role of the Bar Council.

Despite President Pratibha Patil giving her assent to the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Bill, which restrains the police from arresting a person for criminal offences for which the maximum sentence is up to seven-year imprisonment, the government has not notified it following protests by lawyers.
