Jaipur Ragging case: Deceased student was pregnant

Jaipur, Sep 11: The news of pregnancy of the deceased engineering student Somya singh came as a shock to parents as well as the college authorities. A day after the father of the 19-year-old girl who fell from the fourth floor of her college hostel alleged ragging, the post-mortem could not ascertain the exact cause of her death.

“Though the exact cause of the death was not clear from the postmortem, the report confirmed that the girl was pregnant and was carrying a fetus of 14 weeks,” said assistant commissioner of police, Vaishali Nagar, Vineeta.

Somya Singh, hailed from Patna and was a first year B-Tech engineering student at a private college in Bhankrota area. She had been admitted to SMS Hospital on Tuesday after she fell down from the fourth floor of her hostel. But, she succumbed to injuries on Thursday night.

Her father, Mithilesh Kumar Singh, lodged a first information report with Bagaru police station saying she was ragged by seniors which led to her death.

“We are banking on the viscera and forensic science laboratory reports to get the details. So far, doctors have said on September 6, when the girl was admitted to the hospital, the fetus died and doctors asked her parents to get it removed to which the parents did not give their consent. In this case, septicemia could be the cause of the girl’s death,” Vineeta added.

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan College of Engineering for Woman said that no ragging took place at the hostel premises, ever since its establishment in 2002. “Even the girl, Soumya Singh, a student of B-Tech first year, never complained of ragging,” said the principal.
