The evening of Sunday 12th April 2008 saw a gathering of special group of individuals at Saint Andrews Hall, Sardapura, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This was a group of people who have been and are being harassed by their wives. Around 200 people, men and women, gathered to collectively demonstrate their stand against Dowry Prohibition Act, Domestic Violence Act, Maintenance and Custody Act anomalies.
Various individuals shared their cases, issues and problems. The organizers brought to light the statistics regarding such gender-biased laws. They clarified that they were not anti-women but wanted a collective stand to raise voice against misuse of such laws. The association organizing the meet provided their contact number for help and advise for the distressed.
The participants unequivocally questioned the sanity of such laws where asking a wife for cup of tea could be termed as a crime and put under preview of harassment.
The meet was well received and nicely covered by the media. Two out of three prominent newspapers, Dainik Bhaskar and Dainik Navjyoti published the meet with photographs. The other newspaper, Rajasthan Patrika chose not to mention the event!!
The meet was organised by Patni Pidit Pati Sangh (Wife harassed/tortured Husbanbs’ Association). The secretary of the association is Mr Sanjay Parihar and organiser was Adv. Haider Aga. The contact no. (+91) 99280 21531
