Police arrest girl for LeT links Days before marriage

Srinagar, Jul 20: It seems as if there is a fresh round of trouble brewing up in Jammu and Kashmir after a college girl was arrested over alleged Lashkar e Taiba links. The girl is to get married on Jul 23 and the police’s move has angered quite a few in the valley.

Jammu and Kashmir police, turned a deaf ear to the separatist’s warning for her release and have got her remand extended till Jul 26.

Qurat ul Ain, a 22-year old resident of Jalalabad in Sopore district was arrested on July 10, allegedly for having links with the Pakistan-based terror outfit. The police have charged her with murder and linked her to the recent attack at a police station in Sopore that left one dead and 10 injured.

A police spokesperson was quoted by the Indian Express as saying, “She has been arrested on charges of providing a safe house and logistics support and for acting as a courier for foreign militants, especially Abdullah Uni (a top Lashkar commander of north Kashmir).”

The spokesperson added, “Her activities were under surveillance as Qurat was initially working as an overground worker for LeT militant Hamza.” The police even say that when Hamza was killed in an encounter, she started working for Uni.

However, her family members insist that the police is framing her.

Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was quick to siege the opportunity and said that unless she is released before her marriage date, then he would himself join the protests. He said, “If she is not released by July 22, regimented but peaceful protests would be organised in Sopore on Friday.”
