Solicitor General controversy for Union Law Minister

New Delhi, Jul 13: Looks like the newly-appointed Union Law Minister, Salman Khursheed is going to wear a crown of thorns as the issue of Solicitor General, Gopal Subramanium’s resignation threat heats up. The first day into the job, Khursheed will have the issue first on his list of priorities. He is likely to take a decision on this on Wednesday.

With the former Law Minister Veerappa Moily and PM Manmohan Singh requesting Subramaniam to rethink his decision on resigning, the final decision is yet to be made. The Solicitor had put in his papers on Saturday after being miffed with the government’s move to hire a private lawyer to represent the Telecom Ministry on the 2G spectrum scam in the Supreme Court. He had considered the move belittling to his position.

Senior Advocate Rohinton Nariman appeared before the Supreme Court in the 2G spectrum case in place of Subramaniam. He also chose to stay away from all court proceedings. He has indicated his prior intent on not attending the proceedings in a notice in the cause list. He has confirmed his non-attendance in all cases listed before the Chief Justice’s court.
