A woman was arrested for allegedly killing her only one-year-old son in Mohali on Monday evening.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (City-II) Swarandeep Singh said Sita Devi, in her mid-30s, doused acid on her toddler before inflicting a grievous injury on his head at her quarter attached to an industrial unit in Industrial Area, Phase IX here.

To conceal the evidence, the accused put the body in a sack, so that no one would notice it.

It was only late in the evening when her husband Dani Ravani returned home and asked about their son that the crime was discovered. “When Devi did reply to his questions and Ravani failed to trace his son, he strictly asked Sita, who then broke down and confessed to the crime,” said the DSP (City-II).

A policeman said the accused, who had returned from her native place in Bihar on Sunday, was mentally upset as she behaved in a strange manner during the police interrogation.

An argument with her husband made a woman so furious that she reportedly murdered her one-year-old son. During interrogation, Sita Devi, who was arrested on Monday after her husband discovered the crime, confessed that she had also planned to kill their elder son aged five.

“She intended to run away after executing the twin murders. But her plan was foiled as her husband, Dani Advani, returned home much before she had anticipated,” said an investigating officer.

The spat had stemmed from Sita’s resentment that, despite repeated requests, Advani had not gone to bring her back from her parents’ house in Bihar, from where she had returned recently. “This angered her to such an extent that she decided to teach a lesson to her husband,” added the officer.

According to the police, the accused doused acid on her son Rakesh’s face and inflicted a grievous injury on his head. She hid the body in a sack and was plotting the next step when Advani returned from work. He suspected foul play when his repeated questions about Rakesh failed to elicit a response from Sita.

On Tuesday, Sita was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate (Class I) Amanpreet Singh. The court remanded her to judicial custody with a direction to produce her again on September 8, said Phase XI Station House Officer Sub-Inspector Deepinder Singh.

The body of the toddler was handed over to Advani after a postmortem. The autopsy report is still awaited to establish the exact cause of death, Deputy Superintendent of Police (City-II) Swarandeep Singh said.
